Erika Whitson had her all-around game going Thursday night in the WIAA Division 1 gymnastics sectional meet at Waterford.

The Janesville Parker sophomore became the first all-around state qualifier in school history by placing fourth in the sectional. Whitson also was third in the floor exercise and fifth on the balance beam, both qualifying performances, in earning a repeat trip to state.

“That’s quite an accomplishment,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said of Whitson. “In our sectional, as tough as it was, to qualify in the all-around is pretty impressive.

“And with all of the outstanding gymnasts we’ve had over the years at Parker, to be the first to qualify for state in the all-around is pretty neat.”

Whitson finished with a score of 35.625 in the all-around, while Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek’s Emily Schaefer won the event with a score of 36.70.

Janesville Craig will have two gymnasts competing at next Friday’s state individual meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

Freshman Becky Schneider finished third on the balance beam with a score of 9.15 to advance, and sophomore Sara Ennocenti was fifth on vault to also earn an automatic berth.

“Anytime you can make it through to state in our sectional, it’s quite an accomplishment,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “Becky had a great beam routine to make it, and I’m really happy for Sara because she was coming off an injury.”

The co-op team of Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek won the sectional team title, while Waterford was second and also advanced.
