The tough defense that carried Delavan-Darien High School to another Southern Lakes Conference girls soccer championship put the Comets over the top Tuesday night.
After going 7-0 in the Southern Lakes during the regular season, Delavan-Darien clinched the undisputed season title by beating Union Grove, 1-0, in a shootout in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The top-seeded Comets, conference champions for the sixth time in seven years, improved to 8-0 in the Southern Lakes and 10-2-1 overall. They’ll host second-seeded Lake Geneva Badger on Thursday in the tournament championship game.
Badger (12-6-1, 6-2), which finished second in the regular season, advanced to the tournament title game with a 1-0 win over third-seeded Burlington.
Delavan-Darien got past fourth-seeded Union Grove with a 4-2 advantage in the shootout. Kristi Spotz, Natalie Schmidt, Maria Dobratz and Kylie Bliss converted penalty kicks for the Comets.
Kassandra Huerta had seven saves for Delavan-Darien, including a critical one in the shootout to preserve the victory.
Angelina Delgado got an unassisted goal at the 26-mark to give Badger its win over Burlington, which dropped to a
4-4 conference record.
