Given a second chance, Edgerton High's baseball team capitalized.

Jake Zeimet's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Crimson Tide to a 4-3 win over Beloit Turner on Wednesday in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game.

Edgerton plays at Walworth Big Foot for the regional title at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Big Foot won the regular-season meeting between the teams, 2-1.

Turner led 3-1 in the seventh and was one out away from a win, but a dropped fly ball by the right fielder that would've ended the game allowed the Crimson Tide to make it 3-2. Jeremy Hart followed with a RBI single to tie the game.

Zeimet drove in Brennan Deegan with the winning run in the eighth.

“Baseball's a funny game,” Edgerton coach Mike Gregory said. “We give them two runs early that look like they're going to cost us the game, and then they turn around and give two back to us.

“I thought they controlled the game from about the second inning on, but once we caught a break and tied it, I really liked our chances. We had momentum back.”

Edgerton took a 1-0 lead in the first on Zeimet's sacrifice fly.

The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the second thanks to two unearned runs off starter Lucas Gregory. Turner added another run in the third when Zach Virgin scored from third when the catcher threw to first on a dropped third strike.

Gregory went the distance to get the win. The left-hander struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

“A typical performance for Lucas,” Coach Gregory said. “One earned run, five hits and didn't allow a run after the third inning. That's what we've come to expect from him.”

With the game tied 3-3 in the eighth, Deegan walked with two outs. He stole second, and pitcher Jamie Fell intentionally walked Gregory to set up a force out. Zeimet then ripped a 1-1 pitch between the third baseman and shortstop for an RBI single, and Deegan easily beat the throw home.

“All I could think about,” Zeimet said, “was to put the ball in play, and good things will happen.”
