JANESVILLE—A spokeswoman for Panera Bread has confirmed the company will open a restaurant in Janesville by the end of this year.

City staff declined to comment on the project because Panera has not signed an official submittal, said Gale Price, senior planner.

The confirmation came from Amanda Burns via email after a request to the company from a Gazette reporter.

“I don't have additional details on timing and location to confirm just yet, but if you check in later in the spring, I may have more to share,” Burns said in her email.

Panera Bread is a casual restaurant that features bakery products, sandwiches and salads.

In 1993, Au Bon Pain Co. purchased the Saint Louis Bread Company, a chain of 20 bakery-cafes located in the St. Louis area, according to the company's website. In 1999, the company was renamed Panera Bread.

Among Wisconsin restaurants are those in Madison and Delavan.
