Mercury water ski tourney starts Saturday in Janesville
JANESVILLE — The 2013 Mercury Open Show Ski Tournament this weekend features free admission, free parking, concessions, a beer tent and phenomenal skiing, organizers said.
Nine teams—including the top five teams from last year's national show ski championships—will be at Traxler Park on Saturday and Sunday.
“The quality of this tournament is top notch. You'll get to see some phenomenal skiing,” said Dave Rezin, Rock Aqua Jays co-show director with Tim Cullen and Hayley Sarow.
The Aqua Jays are hosting the tournament that starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on the Rock River in Traxler Park, 600 N. Main St.
The tournament jump starts the show ski season and is the first opportunity of the year to see nine show ski teams unveil their new shows, costumes, boats and acts, Rezin said.
“It sets the pace and is the first leg of the Triple Crown,” Rezin said.
The two other tournaments of the season include the Wisconsin state tournament and the show ski nationals.
The Aqua Jays won the first and the most Triple Crown championships—eight—since 1981, according to the club's 2012 program booklet.
The Aqua Jays show tells the story of the legendary American family feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys. It opens with five barefoot pyramids alongside a triple front flip, and the second act includes the club's largest-ever opening pyramid, stacking 36 people.
“It's been 24 to 25 people in the past,” Rezin said.
“We've got tremendous numbers and a lot of strong guy talent. So, we're trying to make the show bigger,” he said.
Flooding this spring forced the Aqua Jays to cancel more shows than all of last year, Rezin said.
“Until Sunday, we hadn't even run a show with costumes, yet,” he said. “If we can take a scaled-down version of our national show, be consistent and execute it under 60 minutes, we'll feel really good.”
Although the Aqua Jays haven't had their normal preparation time, the team's wealth of talent made Rezin optimistic.
“We're looking forward to doing well and hopefully taking first place,” he said.
