— Dan Bayreuther reached a coaching milestone Tuesday.

The longtime Janesville Craig softball coach won his 300th career game with an 8-1 win over Madison Memorial in the second game of a Big Eight Conference doubleheader. Memorial won game one, 4-0.

Bayreuther knew at the end of last season that he was nearing 300 but did not know he needed only three victories entering the 2013 season.

"It never crossed my mind," Bayreuther said of reaching the historic mark. "But now that it's here, all I can say is that I figured out a long time ago that to be successful as a coach, you need to surround yourself with good people. And that's what I've done.

"I've had great kids, and some good people to work with who do it for nothing but the love of the game."

Craig (3-5, 2-3) bounced back in game two behind sophomore pitcher Gabby Loveland. She pitched a complete-game five-hitter and did not walk a batter. The Cougars got two RBI from Alison Hughes and Whitney Williams, while Kylie Clark was 3-for-4 at the plate.

"We didn't play well the first game, especially defensively," Bayreuther said. "The inning they got three runs, we had two errors.

"But we bounced back in game two. We hit the ball better and played better defensively."

Craig hosts Middleton at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in a Big Eight doubleheader at the Youth Sports Complex.
