Quarry death still under investigation
WHITEWATER The Whitewater Police Department announced Wednesday they have located the person who found Benjamin R. Fuder's cellphone.
Whitewater Police Chief Lisa Otterbacher said the development could be a key piece of information as investigators try to determine what happened to Fuder after 12:30 Saturday morning when he was last seen in downtown Whitewater and before his body was discovered early Sunday morning at the bottom of a quarry a mile south of the downtown area.
"We have located the person who found the phone," said Whitewater Police Captain Brian Uhl. "Our detectives talked to that person (Wednesday) morning."
The person who found the phone called a friend of Fuder's listed in the phone's contacts and was told to drop the phone off at Fuder's Whitewater residence.
While Whitewater police investigate the found phone and related issues, the Walworth County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death. Fuder's body was found below the north rim of the quarry operated by Whitewater Limestone, Inc. The quarry, which has no fencing around the rim, is located just outside Whitewater's southern city limits on Franklin Street just north of the Highway 12 bypass.
Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said investigators have found nothing to suggest foul play, but the investigation is continuing, he said.
