— Janesville Craig softball coach Dan Bayreuther thought he had seen just about everything in his long and successful career.

Bayreuther, however, couldn’t recall anything like the first inning his team put together against Madison West over a two-day span.

Craig’s first 16 batters reached base to start the game as part of a 13-run first inning in the Cougars’ 22-2 pasting of the Regents in Big Eight Conference play. The game was suspended on Tuesday in the first inning with Craig already leading 9-2.

Craig (14-4, 11-4) banged out 15 hits, including four hits from leadoff hitter Haley Bayreuther.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” coach Bayreuther said of his team’s first inning outburst. “It was just one of those things where everything went our way.

“And I give our kids credit. They came out and played with a purpose right away today, even though we were already ahead 9-2 and still batting in the first.”

Stephanie Perleberg had two hits for Craig, including a home run. Bayreuther had a double and a triple among her four hits.

Craig plays at Verona today.
