Janesville police recognzied for domestic abuse prevention efforts
The Governor's Council on Domestic Abuse will recognize the Janesville Police Department and Domestic Violence Intervention Team with a Courage Award for Significant Achievement on the issue.
Police Chief Dave Moore says the effort began out of concern for victims. Moore says officers were doing a good job with criminal investigations, but wanted to do more to break the cycle of violence. A collaborative effort with the YWCA, Rock County District Attorney, and Mercy Hospital was the result.
Now, 72-hours after a domestic violence incident, members of the team visit a victim to help them better understand available community resources. Not only does this help the victim, who is often confused from the violence during the initial police investigation, but it also offers police more information.
Ceremonies are planned for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Capital.
