Making e-cycling easy
Go down to the basement and round up that old computer, monitor, printer, TV or other household electronic equipment.
And then dispose of them for FREE!
Janesville-based Universal Recycling Technologies is celebrating its recent successes and commitment to responsible recycling with a series of community e-cycling events.
In Janesville, the event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in the parking lot of the Janesville Mall between Milton Avenue and Kohl's department store.
If you can't make that, URT will do it again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the next Saturday, June 25, at its headquarters, 2535 Beloit Ave., Janesville.
At the events, URT will recycle any and all types of household electronic equipment. It won't, however, accept appliances, dehumidifiers or mercury-containing devices.
URT President Jim Cornwell said the events also would take place June 18 at the two major malls in Madison.
The events allow the company to give back to the communities that have supported it, he said.
"We're proud to be headquartered in this great state," Cornwell said. "We've had a lot of good things going on, and because we are a part of the community, it's important to be involved."
Cornwell expects that the Janesville Mall parking lot will be busy Saturday.
"It's a convenient location, and it's free," he said, noting that URT typically charges a fee to recycle electronic waste. "It will also give people a chance to get out and maybe go into the mall and spend some money to help the local economy."
Cornwell said he hopes the Janesville event can collect 100,000 pounds of electronic waste.
URT is a national electronic and universal waste recycling organization. It provides end-of-life recycling, asset recovery, universal waste, commodities and logistics management services to manufacturers, retailers and municipalities.
Since 2007, Hendricks Holding Co. has owned the company.
The company recently received three significant certifications for its Janesville headquarters and processing facility: ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and certification to the e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment.
URT is the 11th recycling company in the nation to achieve an e-Stewards certification and is working to have all of its facilities certified.
The company, which started in 2003, now has about 200 employees in Janesville and another 110 at several other facilities in the United States.
