— The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of an 8-year-old boy who died Saturday after a utility vehicle accident at a rural Brodhead farm.

In a report Monday, the sheriff’s office said Grant J. Thostenson, 8, of 5746 S. Holden Rd., Brodhead, was killed after he lost control of a John Deere Gator XUV on an embankment at a field access lane near his home.

The vehicle rolled, pinning Thostenson underneath.

Sheriff’s reports said a family member and a hired hand freed Thostenson, who was unresponsive, and attempted to resuscitate the boy. Police arriving at the scene continued to try to resuscitate Thostenson.

Thostenson was transported to Mercy Hospital, Janesville, where he was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, reports said.

Police said Thostenson had experience operating the utility vehicle but that he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
