William Schleisner, who was inducted into the Janesville Hall of Fame in 2006, has died at age 81.

Schleisner was a 1948 graduate of Janesville High School. Although he spent most of his adult life outside of Janesville, he said his days growing up in the city formed his adult life.

“It was an absolutely great place to grow up,” he said in an interview before his hall of fame induction.

Schleisner was the first All-Big Eight Conference football player from Janesville. He earned nine letters at Janesville High, playing football, basketball and golf.

He earned the 1948 American Legion Athletic Medal winner.

Schleisner went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he played football. He played fullback. He was a member of the 1951 Badger squad that was nicknamed the “Hard Rocks” team.

He played behind Alan Ameche in his last years on the UW squad.

After college, Schleisner served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps during the Korean War.

He then moved the Shawano area, where he spent most of his adult life.
