— A sluggish first half kept Janesville Parker’s boys basketball team from pulling off a Big Eight upset Thursday night.

The Vikings turned the ball over 15 times in the first half and allowed nine offensive rebounds as Middleton raced out to an early lead and coasted to a 67-51 win in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Parker (5-17, 2-16) cut the lead to four in the third quarter, but Middleton (15-7, 12-6) pulled away thanks to a stellar night from the free-throw line. The Cardinals made 20-of-25 free throws for the game, including 11-of-12 in the fourth.

“We hit a rough stretch in the first half, otherwise it’s an even game,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “But in our conference, you have to put four quarters together and we didn’t.”

Matt Everson scored 28 points to lead Middleton, including 11 in the fourth.

Junior Creed Knutson had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings.

“Creed had an outstanding game,” Masterson said. “They had a really hard time stopping him.

“We just needed more of a contribution from everybody else.”

Parker opens WIAA Division 1 regional tournament action Tuesday night at Lake Geneva Badger.
