JANESVILLE—Police report bar patrons got in the way of their arrests of two Janesville men who were fighting at about 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

Police were arresting two men in their 20s for fighting when a third man tried to join the fight outside the Time Out Pub and Eatery, 101 E. Milwaukee St., said Janesville police Sgt. Mark Ratzlaff.

Police believe the fight began inside the bar.

Police tased the third man, 22, and arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.

The first two fighters were arrested on battery and resisting charges, and one of them, age 20, was arrested on underage alcohol consumption violations.

The police report describes a “mob” that kept moving closer as the officers made their arrests, and arriving officers worked to keep the crowd back, Ratzlaff said.

A fourth man, 22, was arrested for obstructing after he repeatedly ignored orders to step back as he was trying to record the scene on video, Ratzlaff said.

All those arrested were from Janesville.

A YouTube video of the incident apparently recorded by a bar patron shows a Janesville officer repeatedly ordering people to “get back” while officers cuff three men lying face-down just outside the bar's Main Street entrance.

The video shows what appears to be a Time Out employee also trying to move the crowd back.

Some criticism of police can be heard, but Ratzlaff said the video confirms that police were doing their job.
