David George Hanel, Janesville, WI (1931-2014)

David George Hanel, 82, of Janesville, WI, passed away May 7, 2014. “Dave” was born on Sept. 18, 1931, in rural Belfield, ND, the second of ten children of the late Peter and Mildred Hanel. He graduated in 1950, from Dickinson (Central) High School, ND. Following graduation, he taught one year at New Castle Country School in New Hradec, ND. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December of 1952 as Airman first class and served on active duty through August 1957. He was an administrative clerk with top secret security clearance and handled classified materials. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and Airman of the Quarter Award. Following the completion of his active duty, he re-enlisted in the Air Force Reserves, was promoted to Staff Sergeant in May 1958, and served until September 1974. He attended State Teachers College (now Dickinson State University) of Dickinson, ND, on the G.I. Bill and received in May of 1963, a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education majoring in commerce composite and a minor in history.  

David worked as a carpenter at Carlson Construction in Dickinson. He married Lorretta Messer on June 22, 1959, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hebron, ND. In 1969, they moved to Janesville, where he began his employment at General Motors Janesville plant as a lineman, and later carpentry skilled trades. He retired from GM in April of 1996. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 95 and a parishioner at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Dave was a giving and humorous person who had excellent accounting and carpentry skills. He was a proud U.S. veteran and GM worker. 

Dave is survived by his wife, Lorretta; children: David A. (wife Geraldine & children David I. and Cody), Ursula Mazzarelli (husband Jim & children Gabrielle, Joseph, & Sofia), and Rendell; his brothers: Richard (wife Linda), Raymond (wife Janet); his sisters: Mary Jean Height, Marcella Erickson, and Eileen Frank (husband Ernie); sister-in-laws: Linda K. Hanel & Clara Hanel; brother-in-law, Ray Ridl; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Marvin Hanel; and sisters, Irene Woodard and Regina Ridl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM at the  St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Interment will be held at Milton Lawns Memorial Park with full military honors.
