MIDDLETON—The hot streak of Janesville Parker’s baseball team came to a screeching halt Saturday.

The Vikings, who opened the Big Eight Conference season with 10 straight wins, suffered their first league loss, a 7-1 defeat at Middleton, and followed that up with a 12-1 six-inning nonconference loss to Sheboygan South.

“The things we have been doing well, we didn’t do well today,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “Our pitchers will agree, we were terrible. And our defense was bad.”

Against Middleton, walks and errors piled up in a hurry. Eleven walks and three hit batters gave the Cardinals 14 free baserunners, and the Vikings committed four errors.

Parker struck for a run right away in the first inning, but it mustered just five hits in the game and eight total in 13 innings Saturday.

Against Sheboygan South, the Vikings again scored in the bottom of the first, but they finished with more errors (4) than hits (3).

“Both games, it was too many walks, too many free bases, and we had eight errors on the day. I don’t know if we’ve had eight errors in two weeks,” Martin said. “We’re going to find out a little bit about our mental toughness when we go to Sun Prairie Monday. But we’re still in first place.”

Parker and Sun Prairie each have just one conference loss. They play at 5 p.m. Monday.
