The best things in life—and baseball—are free.

Janesville Craig proved that again Tuesday night.

The Cougars took advantage of eight walks, two hit batters and six stolen bases to beat Madison La Follette 13-3 in a Big Eight Conference road game.

Craig improved to 4-1 in league play. La Follette, which ended Sun Prairie’s 30-game winning streak, is 2-4.

“Once we got it going in the second, we just kept on the gas all night,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “We drew eight walks and got hit twice, so that’s 10 free runners, and we stole six bases. That’s a lot of free bases that allowed us to score.”

Chase Nyborg’s two-run double in the second inning provided the spark for Craig, which took a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars manufactured four more runs in the third and another pair in the fourth to pad the lead.

That was more than enough for the Cougars’ pitchers. Starter Alex Faust went five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Kellen Stearns worked two scoreless innings of relief.

“Faust and Stearns were outstanding,” Herbst said. “They struck out seven with no free passes. That’s huge.”

The Cougars blew the game open with five more runs in the seventh inning.

They’ll host Madison Memorial at 5 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Park.
