JANESVILLE—Former Janesville School Board member Dale Thompson hopes to hit the ground running when he officially re-joins the board May 13.

Until then, he will canvas staff and learn about issues as much as possible, he said.

Thompson will be sworn into outgoing board member Scott Feldt's seat Tuesday night. Feldt has served on the board since 2011.

"I'll be there Tuesday night with a smile on my face," Thompson said. "I'll take my oath of office then go sit and observe."

Thompson received 20.27 percent of the vote earlier this month to win the seat. He received the second most votes of candidates vying for the three available seats.

The other two winning seats in the recent election were incumbents Kevin Murray and Bill Sodemann.

"I've been doing a lot of studying and meeting with staff," Thompson said. "Soon they'll start getting next year's budget, piece by piece. I'm sure I'll have questions then."

Thompson served on the school board from 1992-98, he said. Some things have changed, but many have stayed the same, he said.

After his orientation, Thompson plans to foster relationships with current board members, he said.

"I want to get to know other board members and see where they are coming from," Thompson said. "I'm looking forward to it.

In other business the board will:

--Send notices of non-renewal to 10 district staff members, not related to performance.

--Discuss applying for the Wisconsin Forward Award.

--Discuss and possibly approve capital improvements which include roof repair and replacement at Craig and Parker high schools and a parking lot replacement at Edison Middle School.
