Parker softball drops two to open season
JANESVILLE--Janesville Parker's softball team was rudely greeted by the start of its season on Saturday.
The Vikings were swept in a doubleheader, losing 12-2 to Milton and 15-3 to Fort Atkinson, with both games ending after six innings.
“We have some work to do, but we also saw some good moments,” Parker coach Alli Driscoll said. “I think we have to hang onto those and work on the things that weren't so good.”
Sophomore pitcher Brenna Diehls got the start in the first game and struck out six batters while walking five over three innings.
Diehls provided the moment of the day in the first game with a two-run home run to center field.
“We were all pretty excited for her,” Driscoll said. “She's a good hitter.”
Milton junior Maddie McCue was 2-for-4 at the plate, giving her a 5-for-8 day over the course of the doubleheader against both Janesville teams. The Red Hawks scored their 12 runs on 13 hits.
Walks and errors doomed Parker in the second game. Fort Atkinson scored 15 runs on just 10 hits thanks to four errors and seven walks.
Andrea Coles went 2-for-2 for Parker with a triple.
“We've got to do a little cleanup on the fielding,” Driscoll said. “Our hitting will come around. It was only the second game. We just need to attack the ball in every situation and be aggressive, whether we're batting or fielding.”
Parker opens Big Eight Conference play at Sun Prairie on Tuesday.
