Ruchti helps lead Warhawks to Sweet 16
A big second half carried UW-Whitewater’s women’s basketball team to the Sweet 16 on Saturday night.
The Warhawks busted out for 52 points in the second half in rallying for an 87-78 win over St. Thomas in an NCAA Division III second-round game.
Whitewater (24-4) plays WIAC rival UW-Oshkosh in a regional semifinal game on Thursday night.
Brodhead graduate Kristen Ruchti was the scoring star for Whitewater against St. Thomas. The team’s top reserve came off the bench to score a game-high 25 points on 12-for-15 shooting. Senior Mary Merg added 22 for the Warhawks, while Kaitlyn Thill chipped in 14.
Whitewater trailed 39-36 at half, but took the lead for good at 63-62 on a basket by Katie Burton with 9:08 to play. The Warhawks pulled away by making 17 of 19 free throws in the second half.
The Warhawks swept Oshkosh during the regular season.
