Area wrestlers have up-and-down day at state

MADISON--It was a mixed bag of results for area wrestlers Thursday.

On the first day of the WIAA state individual tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison, no area wrestlers in Division 1 advanced to today’s semifinals.

Janesville Craig’s Airk Furseth, along with Milton’s Nolan Shea, Evan Whitehead and Bowen Wileman, won a preliminary match but lost in the quarterfinals. Shea, the defending state champion at 106 pounds, lost a tough 3-2 decision to Nathan Smith of Mukwonago in his quarterfinal bout.

Wileman and Whitehead were pinned in their quarterfinal matches, while Furseth lost a 10-0 major decision to second-ranked Ty Lee of Kaukauna.

In Division 2, Edgerton’s Sonny Schieldt won his opening-round match at 120 with a 4-2 decision over Ellsworth’s Anders Lantz. Schieldt (40-4) wrestles Ty Pelot (46-4) of Two Rivers in a quarterfinal match today.

Evansville/Albany’s Jordan Meyer pinned Dakota Danner of Mayville at 132 pounds. Meyer takes a 39-3 record into today’s quarterfinal match against Robert Csukker (46-1) of Stanley-Boyd.

Also in Division 2 quarterfinal matches today, Brodhead/Juda’s Gavin Baade (40-1) wrestles Dennis Schultz (23-3) of Ellsworth at 182 pounds, while teammate Logan Maurer (45-1) faces Thor Riemer (38-4) of Osceola.
