There’s a reason Milton High has won 21 consecutive conference wrestling championships.

Every year, the Red Hawks are able to put a deep and talented lineup on the mat.

That was on display once again Saturday at the Division 1 regional tournament at Janesville Craig.

Milton had five individual champions and finished at least fourth in every weight class but two in winning the team title with 240 points. Elkhorn, which led after the semifinals, finished second with 225 but could not match Milton’s depth.

“We’ve struggled to win this tournament in the past because it’s so tough, but today, it was a total team effort in getting the job done,” Milton coach Pat Jauch said. “In a tournament like this, as we found out today, every point counts.

“Our goal was to try and get back to the state team tournament, and by winning here today, we gave ourselves a chance to do that.”

Milton wrestles Stoughton on Tuesday night for the right to go to the state team tournament in Madison. The Red Hawks defeated the Vikings in a regular-season dual meet this season and also finished ahead of them at the Badger Conference tournament.

Nolan Shea (113), Billy Pitzner (152), Bowen Wileman (160), John McCarthy (170) and Randy Lipke (195) all won individual titles for Milton, but it was Lipke’s win that solidified the regional title. The senior upset No. 1 seed Zach Biehn of Westosha Central, 4-3 in double overtime, in the title bout to give the Red Hawks the lead for good.

Janesville Craig, which finished fourth, had the city’s only individual champion in Airk Furseth. The junior returned after a two-month layoff due to a knee injury and won the 106-pound title. Furseth pinned his first two opponents in the first period before beating Badger Conference champion Dalton Shea of Milton in the title bout, 5-2.

“I’d say I’m at about 75 percent right now,” Furseth said. “My back is bothering me a little bit because I haven’t wrestled in so long. My legs actually felt pretty good today.

“I’ve got another week to practice and to improve my conditioning to get in better shape. I’m just glad to be back and able to wrestle.”

Craig advanced 11 wrestlers to next Saturday’s sectional meet at Oconomowoc, while Janesville Parker will send two.
