WHITEWATER--The UW-Whitewater football team will attempt to cap off an undefeated regular season today at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks, atop the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 6-0 (9-0 overall), host winless UW-River Falls (0-6, 0-9). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

UW-Whitewater clinched at least a share of the WIAC title with a victory over Stevens Point last weekend, but can seal up the outright title—and an automatic bid in the NCAA Division III playoffs—with a victory today.

“It’s our Senior Week. It’s a time we honor our 15 seniors, and it’s their last guaranteed home game at Perkins Stadium, though we hope to have more,” UW-W head coach Lance Leipold said. “There’s a lot to play for and there’s lots of focus on what we need to do to get better.”

The Warhawks’ senior class is a diverse group that got to this stage via a variety of routes—whether putting in as much as six years of work due to injuries or those who rarely saw the field but have been dedicated to the team.

The group includes Whitewater High graduate Loussaint Minett and Evansville High grad Andrew Keister.

“The linebackers—(Cole) Klotz, (Kyle) Wismer, (Ryan) Cortez, (Josh) Williams—are some of the best linebackers we’ve ever had, but their play and maturity speak for themselves,” Leipold said. “Andrew Keister doesn’t have a lot to say, but he goes about his business. That’s quietly been the reason that this team has bounced back, is the seniors’ hard work and leading by example.”

River Falls is coming off a 19-18 loss to Eau Claire last Saturday. While the records of the two teams playing today are lopsided, River Falls has lost its last three games by a combined 11 points.

“They’ve got a nice scheme offensively and are doing some nice things in their spread attack,” Leipold said. “They’ve been in ballgames. If you let them hang around for four quarters, they might think this is the week they can get over the hump.”
