JANESVILLE—Police are alarmed by the number of burglaries to homes on the north side of Janesville and warn residents to lock their doors and report suspicious people to help prevent the crimes.

Thieves started by focusing on a couple of subdivisions west of Milton Avenue and north of Highway 14, Detective Chris Buescher said, but they have expanded to cover more territory.

Now, police are seeing burglaries and thefts from cars all over neighborhoods north of Highway 14 in the area between West Rotamer Road and Harmony Town Hall Road, Buescher said.

He estimated there have been six break-ins around that area since August.

Many of the burglaries have been late at night while residents are home, Buescher said, and that concerns police.

“It kind of ups the ante,” he said. “It just takes it to a different level when you're entering a home when there's people inside.”

Police remind residents to keep their doors locked and garage doors closed and to not forget to lock access doors from garages to houses.

Buescher also encouraged residents to tell police of any suspicious people they might see around the neighborhoods, which he said are “typically quiet.”
