Doctor: Larry Shannon competent to stand trial for Whitewater attempted murder
ELKHORN—A Whitewater man charged with trying to kill two young girls and leading police on a high-speed chase is fit to stand trial, a doctor said this week.
An attorney for Larry Shannon, who Walworth County prosecutors have charged with 11 felonies including attempted murder and child sexual assault, requested a competency hearing for him in September.
Assistant Public Defender Travis Schwantes told the court he believed mental illness made Shannon unable to assist in his defense.
At a hearing on Tuesday, however, a court-appointed doctor said Shannon is competent and can proceed with the case.
The court scheduled Shannon for a jury trial in January.
