Red Hawks floored by success
MILTON--Milton High’s girls volleyball team made a little history Thursday night.
Thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Monona Grove, the Red Hawks became the first team to win a game or a match on the new gymnasium floor at Milton High.
Milton improved to 4-2 in the Badger South Conference by winning 25-19, 28-26 and 25-23.
Forced to play all of their matches on the road this season while the floor was being replaced, the Red Hawks and coach Wayne Hansen finally enjoyed some home hospitatlity.
“It’s especially nice for our seniors to get to play at home in front of our crowd,” Hansen said. “And to win on Parents Night and raise money for research on pediatric cancer makes it extra special.”
Milton led 8-6 in game one before going on a 5-0 run with Samantha Soddy serving to take a commanding 13-6 lead. The Red Hawks put game one away on three straight service points Sierra Zimmerman.
Game two saw the Red Hawks jump out to an early 12-5 lead before the Silver Eagles rallied, eventually going up 25-24. Milton tied the game at 25-all and eventually won 28-26 when the Red Hawks’ frontline executed a perfect block at the net.
Monona Grove (3-3) stormed out to a 10-5 lead in game three, but Milton rallied behind the serve of Samantha Scalissi. The senior libero served five straight points as a two-point Milton deficit quickly became an 18-15 lead. The Silver Eagles eventually got within one at 23-24, but the Red Hawks’ Kate Quade executed a touch shot over the hands of the blockers.
“This was a big match for us and a big win,” Hansen said. “I think this will give us the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and that’s important.”
Scalissi was all over the court as she finished with 20 assists. Sydney Hecimovich had 23 assists for Milton, while sophomore Rachel Butterfield led the team with 10 kills.
