Janesville finishes sweep of Michigan Warriors
JANESVILLE—McP would’ve been proud.
On a weekend when the Janesville Jets and Mercy Health System raised money for cancer research in honor of the late Gazette sportswriter John McPoland, the home team played its best hockey of the season.
Robin Hoglund broke a 2-2 tie with a goal at 8:09 of the third period as the Jets pulled away for a 5-2 NAHL North Division win at the Janesville Ice Skating Arena.
Janesville, by virtue of is shootout win Friday night, earned its first sweep of the season.
“As a staff, we’ve been preaching that work ethic is No. 1 thing for us,” Janesville coach Joe Dibble said. “And that was the difference for us in the third period. We outworked them.”
The game was tied after two periods before the Jets went to work in the third. Hoglund took a perfect feed from defenseman Jesse Juntilla and fired a shot past Michigan goalie Dillon Kelley to make it 3-2. The teams were skating 4-on-4 with a player each in the penalty box, but Juntilla outworked his man for the puck and fed the streaking Hoglund in front of the net for the game-winner.
The Jets made it 4-2 on Michael Louria’s goal at 12:53. Similar to the first goal of the third period, Jordan Himley poked the puck away from a Warrior defender and found Louria crashing in on the net where he was able to slip a wrist shot past Kelley.
Zach Avolio concluded the scoring with an empty-netter with 47 seconds left to play.
Brock Kautz earned the win in net, stopping 33 of 35 shots.
With the rink painted pink and Janesville players sporting jerseys with pink accents, Dibble said the weekend couldn’t have gone any better.
“To see our guys and this community get behind such a great cause is something I haven’t seen anywhere else,” Dibble said. “When I first came here last year, I was blown away by the outpouring of support from our fans and the community. I think this year was even better. It was a special weekend.”
