The Janesville Craig boys soccer team hung right with Big Eight contender Middleton for one half on Tuesday night.

But the Cardinals scored right before halftime and then pulled away in the second half for a 6-2 Big Eight home victory.

“Obviously we were doing pretty well throughout the first half, but their quality and depth showed through,” Craig coach Mike Hook said. “We were realistic and knew it was going to be a tough game. They're right at the top of the standings, second place overall, and they proved why. They have a lot of skilled players.”

The Cougars fell behind in the first minute, but got goals from Hozai Ceballos and Dan Swales, the latter of which tied the match 2-2 in the 32nd minute.

Middleton regained the lead just two minutes before halftime, made it 4-2 midway through the second and pulled away late.

Austyn Meier had nine saves for the Cougars, who are 0-8 in the Big Eight. They host Milton in a nonconference match at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, a match where any youth wearing Rock Soccer Club jerseys earns free admission.
