Milton Red Hawks notch their first win of 2013
MILTON—Bill O’Leary got an early shower Friday night, and while it was chilling, it felt extremely good.
The first-year coach at Milton High watched his team registered its first victory of the season, beating visiting Oregon, 31-7, in a Badger South contest.
Moments after the game ended, the players doused O’Leary with water.
“It feels good,” the veteran coach said. “It sure does.”
The Red Hawks fell behind, 7-0, in the second quarter before they reeled off the final 31 points to improve to 1-3.
“We quit messing around,” O’Leary said. “We met this week and decided to go to two-platoon football. I guess the plan worked.”
Zachary Hoard rushed 19 times for 156 yards and a 10-yard touchdown, most of the yards coming after he lost a fumble.
“We pulled him aside and told him that he was our senior back, and he couldn’t be dropping the ball,” O’Leary said. “He did the job.”
Quarterback Tyler Westrick added 86 rushing yards, including scoring runs of 10 and 1 yards.
Westrick also completed five of 13 passes for 70 yards, with an 11-yard pass to James Christensen.
“He’s a dynamic athlete,” O’Leary said about Westrick. “We talked all week about giving him the freedom to run.”
O’Leary also was pleased that the Red Hawks were only penalized five times for 45 yards.
“That’s the second-lowest total of the season,” O’Leary said. “We’re figuring out that if we just go out and do what we’re supposed to do, good things will happen.”
The Red Hawks play at Monroe next Friday.
