Brodhead/Juda wins its Homecoming game against Clinton
BRODHEAD—Jordan Douglas’ Homecoming date better hope he saved a few dances for tonight.
The senior spent much of his Friday night waltzing into the end zone.
Douglas scored four touchdowns on just 14 carries and helped Brodhead/Juda pile up 428 rushing yards as they ran all over Clinton 52-26 in a Rock Valley South football game at Larsen Field.
“It’s my last Homecoming, and I’m just really proud that the whole team (got the win),” Douglas said. “It’s an honor. It means a lot to me.”
An early field goal gave the Cardinals (4-1, 2-0) a lead, and Jordan Kraak added to it with a 12-yard scamper late in the first quarter to make it 10-0.
Early in the second, Douglas had the play of the night. He took a handoff around the right edge, picked up a block from junior Logan Maurer and cruised 80 yards to put Brodhead/Juda up three scores.
“I cut back and was looking back to make sure nobody was behind me,” Douglas said. “I was pretty tired after that one.”
Clinton quarterback Derek Severson quickly responded with a 71-yard rushing touchdown of his own, but the Cardinals refused to relinquish the momentum thanks to the one-two rushing punch of Douglas and Derek Turner.
Turner—the fullback who finished with 151 yards on 25 carries—answered the Cougars’ touchdown with a two-yard plunge of his own. And Douglas (160 yards) added another before halftime.
“When they get the momentum, they’re a big, strong, physical team up front,” said Clinton coach Jeff Spiwak, whose team fell to 3-2 and 1-1. “They’ve got big backs and they play downhill, and they were really effective doing that against us.”
Douglas added touchdown runs of 15 and 4 yards in the second half. Brodhead/Juda rushed for nearly 6.5 yards per carry.
“We’ve got a huge physical line this year, and everything’s happening behind them right now,” Cardinals coach B.J. Bockhop said. “They’re working as a unit, and their coordination has been great.”
It was the second consecutive convincing victory for the Cardinals since they suffered their lone loss to Edgerton in week three.
“You don’t want to say a loss is a good thing … but it put some things in perspective with our team,” Bockhop said. “After that loss, we’ve come back with a great focus every day.”
Severson finished with 24 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown, and he threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.
“We went into halftime and obviously the kids were really disappointed,”
Spiwak said. “I told them, ‘You can come out with a great attitude and great effort, and you can control those things.’ I think they did that, and I was very proud of that.”
The Cougars host Big Foot on Friday. After Homecoming, the Cardinals will turn their attention to a road game at Palmyra-Eagle.
