East Troy proves worthy of top ranking
WHITEWATER--As good as advertised.
East Troy’s girls volleyball team came into Tuesday’s Rock Valley North match with Whitewater as the top-ranked team in Division 2. The Trojans didn’t disappoint.
Kelsey Kiesow had seven aces, Mary Dodge finished with 12 kills and Brittney Jakscht added 29 assists to lead East Troy to a 3-0 win. The Trojans won by scores of 25-6, 25-13, 25-7.
East Troy jumped all over Whitewater in game one in racing out to a 17-2 lead, as the Whippets had no answer for the talented Trojans.
“I’ve got the luxury of having 13 girls on the roster that are all fighting for playing time,” East Troy coach Jeremy Weis said. “I haven’t always had that, so when someone decides to take a play off or is struggling, they know someone is sitting on the bench waiting to take their place. That makes for good competition between everybody.”
East Troy, which was coming off its second major tournament win of the season last Saturday, improved to 21-0 overall this season. The Trojans won the prestigious Joust Invitational earlier this month, and followed that up by winning the Brookfield Central Invitational. Among East Troy’s wins this season were matches against Division 1 powerhouses Menomonee Falls, Muskego and Westosha Central.
“We lost the first game to Divine Savior and Muskego both in the Brookfield tournament, and I was really proud of how the team responded to the challenge after that,” Weis said. "Both those losses showed us some things that we needed to work on.
“Tonight, I thought, it was important to be mentally prepared to play, and we were.”
East Troy substituted freely in game two but still managed to take a 14-3 lead. Game three was all about the serving of Kiesow. The senior served 13 straight points as East Troy’s lead went from 4-1 to 17-1 in game three.
Lindsay Chase had two aces and six assists to lead Whitewater.
