It is unfortunate that President Obama (whom we also support) put us in this box with his talk about “crossing the red line.” Use of chemical weapons is a clear violation of international agreements, and it is the responsibility of the international community to prosecute Bashar Assad for his blatant infraction. There is no doubt he should be stopped, and we support efforts to call attention to his crimes and lead the international community.

Unfortunately, America’s record is not spotless in this regard. Sending cruise missiles, which would result in more casualties, would not only be hypocritical but would not be in our long-term interests because it would further alienate us from the greater Muslim world. It is also highly unlikely that our country would not be dragged into further conflict.

We must avoid the temptation to look strong by acting as a bully. All the talk about the U.S. “looking like wimps” is testosterone driven. This is not a sporting event. It is an opportunity to rise to the moral high ground. Back off! Let's put our resources into helping the huge need in the refugee camps.
