Bill Peyer didn’t know what to expect from his Janesville Craig High girls tennis team Tuesday afternoon, but he was pleased with what he saw.

The Cougars edged visiting Madison East, 4-3, in a Big Eight Conference opener.

“It was a good start,” Peyer said. “Last time we had a close match, we had three tiebreakers and lost all three. We won two of those today. I think that’s a little maturity.”

The Cougars’ Clara Langbecker, Kristin Whitcomb and Amanda Wilkie won their singles matches, while No. 1 doubles team of Cierra Reese and Sara Runde also were victorious.

The Cougars are idle until a Big Eight match next Tuesday at Verona. A match scheduled against Madison West at home on Thursday has been moved to next Wednesday.
