WHITEWATER–The UW-Whitewater Student Optimist Club, along with Whitewater and Janesville community members, is selling shirts and raising money to fund a trip to Africa.

The group will travel to Burkina Faso from Jan. 3-18, 2014, and conduct outreach projects such as planting gardens; providing medical supplies, including an ambulance, and building a computer lab in a local high school. They also will start a student optimist chapter at the University of Ouagadougou.

Trip advisor Kat Shanahan said students from the optimist club came up with the idea to bring technology to schools in Africa. As support grew, more people joined in the trip, which is allowing the students to take part in projects that go beyond technology.

New T-shirts are available each month at http://bit.do/OptimistTshirt to help fund the trip. To make a donation, email Shanahan at ShanahanKJ18@uww.edu or Kim Adams at AdamsK@uww.edu.

Another way to support the trip is through "Hire an Optimist," a program that allows community members to hire a student in the club to do housework, lawn care, babysitting and more. All money will go toward the trip.

To hire an optimist club student, email Optimist@uww.edu.
