JANESVILLE—There's no debate over who the best men's golfer is in the city of Janesville.

Sam Van Galder is clearly at the front of the pack after winning his second straight Janesville Men's City Tournament title on Sunday and his fourth in the last seven years.

Van Galder cruised to a 9-shot win after firing a 3-over par 75 at the Janesville Country Club. The 2005 Janesville Craig graduate finished with a 219 total, nine better than former high school teammate Bobby Kennedy, who fashioned the low round of the day Sunday with a 73 and finished at 228.

Despite the lopsided win and playing on cruise control the entire round, Van Galder said title No. 4 felt just as good as No. 1 in 2007.

“It's still a great feeling,” Van Galder said. “I love playing in this tournament. Maybe this win wasn't as dramatic as some of the others, but it still feels great.

“I think the only thing I'm a little disappointed about is that I wanted to try and win by double digits. But Bobby must've played really well today, and he's very capable of that.”

Van Galder's round started with a double bogey on No. 1, but he got a stroke back by chipping in for birdie on No. 8. He bogeyed No. 12 and double-bogeyed No. 15 after hitting his drive in the pond, but birdied the par-3 16th to finish 3-over for the round.

“I hit a lot of putts that looked good but lipped out,” Van Galder said. “I think I had four birdie putts lip out.

“And without anyone really pushing me, I hit a couple of drivers on holes where I normally wouldn't. It worked on No. 13, but it cost me on No. 15.”

Mike Lansing won First Flight by two strokes over Brian Brieske, while Randy Krueger was the Second Flight medalist, defeating Dave DeGarmo by six shots. Dan Hermanson won Third Flight by three shots over Bryan Thorson.
