Janesville teacher suspected of being drunk on the job resigns
JANESVILLE--A teacher suspected of being drunk during an end-of-the-year field trip has resigned, the Janesville School District announced Tuesday night.
The school board accepted the resignation of Maria Caya without comment at its meeting Tuesday.
“The School District of Janesville is respecting her decision to resign, effective July 9, 2013,” according to a short statement. “The board of education and administration appreciate her efforts and wish her the best.”
Caya and other teachers had accompanied about 120 fourth- and fifth-graders on a field trip on the last day of school, June 6.
Caya's husband took her from the bowling alley later that morning after other school staff reported she was behaving oddly, according to police reports.
Caya was taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, where her blood registered 0.27 percent alcohol, according to a police report.
A police investigation concluded no one was endangered or neglected and that Caya should not face criminal charges. Caya declined to talk to police for their investigation.
Caya worked for the school district for 14 years.
