Janesville Craig celebrated a regional championship after securing a 62-37 win over Lake Geneva Badger on Saturday
The Janesville Craig senior earned an escape in the tiebreaker then rode out West Allis Central's Tyus White for 30 seconds to win the Division 1 113-pound state championship, 2-1, at the WIAA state individual tournament Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
The Janesville Craig Cougars bounced back after losing their last regular season game to beat Madison La Follette, 65-52, in a Division 1 regional semifinal game that was closer than the final score suggests.
The Cougars were sixth and the Vikings seventh at the WIAA Mukwonago Sectional
Janesville Craig's Airk Furseth (44-0) dominated Dylan Koontz of Stevens Point in their Division 1 113-pound semifinal match Friday night, winning 7-2 at the WIAA state individual wrestling tournament at the Kohl Center. Furseth wrestles Tyus White (38-6) of West Allis Central in tonight's title bout, with matches beginning at 6 p.m.
Janesville's Airk Furseth and Milton's Nolan Shea are moving up in state wrestling.
Airk Furseth, Nolan Shea and Logan Maurer will take unbeaten records into Thursday's opening-round matches of the WIAA state wrestling tournament.
The Vikings were selected as the No. 15 seed in the Beloit Memorial Sectional and will host No. 18 Kenosha Tremper on March 3 (all tournament games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.). As the No. 16 seed, the Cougars will play No. 17 Watertown.
Janesville Craig lost its regular-season finale, 70-51, on Saturday to Middleton.
The Spartans, behind a record-setting performance in the 200 medley relay, finished with 350.5 points.
