JANESVILLE—Police officers from all over the city rushed to the near east side on Saturday night after a report that a man had shot his neighbor’s two dogs.

"The neighborhood is safe. It’s an isolated incident. The subject is in custody,” said police Sgt. Todd Kleisner shortly after 9 p.m.

Kleisner said he could not immediately release the man’s identity.

One dog died and the other was wounded in the shootings in the 1400 block of Sharon Street, Kleisner said.

Police were called to the scene at 7:50 p.m. The man was thought to have left his home but later was found in his garage. He “eventually” surrendered, dropping the rifle, and was taken into custody without further incident at 8:30 p.m., Kleisner said.

Police were still interviewing witnesses as The Gazette went to press Saturday, so Kleisner could not immediately report a motive for the shootings.
