Rock County public libraries to celebrate Twain

Rock County public libraries are organizing events to celebrate Mark Twain as part of the annual Big Read program.

The libraries have been giving away free copies of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," and book discussions will be held at the following locations:

-- Clinton Public Library, 214 Mill St., Clinton, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17.

-- Milton Public Library event at Northleaf Winery, 232 S. Janesville St., Milton, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.

-- Beloit Public Library, 605 Eclipse Blvd., Beloit, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25.

-- Edgerton Public Library event at Anchor Inn, 709 E. Highway 59, Newville, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26.

-- Orfordville Public Library, 203 W. Beloit Street, Orfordville, at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 26.

-- Hedberg Public Library, 316 S. Main St., Janesville, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 1.

-- Eager Free Public Library, 39 W. Main St., Evansville. Discussion is being scheduled for June.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The regional program is led by the Irvin L. Young Library in Whitewater and UW-Whitewater's Young Auditorium.

Other events include:

-- Old-Fashioned Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28, at Milton Public Library, 430 E. High St. Kids will enjoy Tom-Sawyer-themed activities, such as sack races, marbles and crafts.

-- Student Tom Sawyer murals will be on display at the Milton House Museum from May 1 to June 1 and at Hedberg Public Library from June 2 to July 1. The murals are a project with artist Joel Schoon Tanis, who is working with area schools.

-- Hal Holbrook's "Mark Twain Tonight!" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Young Auditorium, UW-Whitewater. Call (262) 472-2222 for tickets or visit uww.edu/youngauditorium.

-- "Through Jim's Eyes," a one-man show by Uprooted Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Milton House Museum. The show is free.
