May 14, 1929 - December 3, 2017

Jonathan Arthur Bader, age 88, of Janesville, died on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center. He was born in Juneau County, near New Lisbon, on May 14, 1929, the son of Arthur J. and Almira (Mellor) Bader. He grew up in rural Wisconsin, living many of his happy childhood years on what he lovingly referred to as “the ten acres,” outside of Mauston. In spite of growing up during the Great Depression, he had a wonderful childhood, riding the neighbor’s horses, and swimming in the dammed-up creek nearby. He graduated from Elroy High School in 1947. Prior to moving to Janesville, he was employed by Dairyland Power, setting the poles for carrying electrical power along the Mississippi and elsewhere. He served in the Army Signal Corps from 1951 to 1953, most of which was spent on the island of Okinawa. He married the love of his life and forever soulmate, Donna Lee Powell, in the Methodist Church in Ironton, WI on February 20, 1954. Upon securing employment with General Motors, he moved to Janesville in the fall of 1955, and retired from GM on July 1, 1988, 33 years later. He was a member of the UAW Local 95, Rock County Historical Society, Rock County Humane Society, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1621, and the Loyal Order of Moose. Spiritual life was very important to him. Before attending Shopiere Congregational Church, he was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church, where he served as lay leader and Sunday school teacher. At Shopiere, he was a Deacon for many years, regularly attended Bible study and helped organize the yearly men’s retreat. In addition to his love of nature, the outdoors, farms and fields, he would rarely pass up a good polka. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his daughters, Alicia and Mary, who have fond memories of family camping trips, vacations, time spent together on holidays and throughout the year.

He is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Donna Bader (whom he always referred to as his Queen); his daughter, Alicia Liss and son-in-law, Barry Liss of Asbury, NJ; his daughter, Mary Schulz and son-in-law, Dan Schulz of New Berlin, WI; his granddaughter, Samantha Schulz, of Los Angeles, CA; his grandson, Tom Schulz and his wife, Caitlin Schulz of New Berlin, WI; his brother, Clifford Bader and his wife, Virginia Bader of Mauston, WI; his brother-in-law, Dale Clark of Janesville; nieces; nephews; and many other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Viola Fields, Violet Bader and Carol Clark; and two brothers, Boyd Bader and Raymond Bader.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. at SHOPIERE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, 5328 East Church Street, Shopiere, WI with Rev. Edward Greenfield officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Schneider Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.
