JANESVILLE--A highlight-reel goal from captain Kip Hoffmann sent the Janesville Jets past the Brookings Blizzard in an overtime thriller Friday night.

Hoffmann beat a Brookings defender around the outside and used just one hand to flip the puck over the glove of Blizzard goalie Zach Borgiel, sending Janesville to a 6-5 win to open an North American Hockey League series.

"I noticed the defenseman was a little flat-footed and so I kept my feet moving around him like I've been doing since I was a little kid," Hoffmann said. "Honestly, I have no words for how that puck went in, but I'm happy we came away with the win."

The Jets took a 1-0 lead into the second period before surrendering three goals in the middle frame.

At the end of the second period, Brookings defenseman Cameron Teamor took a game misconduct spearing penalty.

Janesville responded with three power-play goals in one minute to take a 4-3 lead.

After the Blizzard tied the game again, Hoffmann gave the Jets the lead with six minutes left before Parker Revering tied the game for Brookings with just three seconds left in regulation.

Hoffmann finished with two goals and an assist, and goalie Daniel Lebedeff made 30 saves in the win.

"Our defensive zone coverage was brutal. Tonight we didn't take care of the puck in our end. We need to be better tomorrow," Jets head coach Gary Shuchuk said after the game.

The same two teams play today at 7 p.m. in Janesville.
