Woman held on $30,000 bond in Janesville hotel shooting
JANESVILLE—A woman accused of robbing and shooting at a man in a Janesville hotel was held on $30,000 bond after her initial appearance in Rock County Court on Thursday.
LaToya L. Hill, 20, of 817 Church St., Beloit, was charged with robbery by use of force and first-degree recklessly endangering safety by use of a weapon in the Nov. 21 incident at the Holiday Inn Express.
The district attorney’s office did not charge her with first-degree attempted homicide, which police had suggested.
Hill had been held at the Winnebago County Jail in Illinois after she was arrested just south of the state line in South Beloit on Sunday.
The criminal complaint, also released Thursday, tells a story similar to the one police reported earlier: A hotel guest contacted Hill through an app called Meetme.com with the intent of paying her for sex.
Hill and another woman arrived at the hotel, went to his room, and Hill and the man agreed on a price of $50.
Hill went to the bathroom and exited holding a handgun and demanding the man give her his money, according to the complaint.
The man seemed frightened and said something like: “Don’t shoot me. I’ll give you my money,” the second woman told police.
The man gave her cash, and she demanded more, according to the complaint, and he then leaned to the side in an attempt to see if the gun was loaded, and the gun went off. He believed the round passed near his head.
He tried to push the gun away, and a second shot went off, he told investigators.
The two began struggling for possession of the gun, and he pushed her into the hallway. Another hotel guest dressed only in boxer shorts joined the fray and took the gun away from them, according to the complaint.
Sometime during the struggle, Hill said, “He raped me!” at least once, witnesses told police. She fled after the second man got the gun.
The complaint identifies the Canadian and the woman who accompanied Hill only by their initials.
The second woman said she believed Hill intended to exchange sex for cash and did not know Hill had a gun. She fled while the struggle was going on in the hallway.
A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Dec. 11.
