JANESVILLE--Janesville Craig's girls basketball team did its best to pester Madison East on Tuesday night.

The Cougars, with just one player on the roster at 5-foot-9 or taller, went up against a lineup where six of the top seven players are at least 5-8.

Senior Erin Howard, a 6-foot-2 forward on her way to Auburn, scored 19 points to lead the Purgolders to a 56-45 Big Eight Conference victory on Bob Suter Court.

The Cougars are 1-1, while East was playing its first game of the season.

“They made a little run in the second half, but our kids, they didn't back down,” Craig head coach Kerry Storbakken said. “They played with poise and energy.”

A 7-0 run out of halftime proved to be the difference, as East grabbed a 14-point lead and led fairly comfortably the rest of the way.

The Cougars, led by sophomore Cassie Goswick's 15 points, got within 10 late but were plagued by 15 second-half turnovers.

“We had some empty possessions, and that hurts,” Storbakken said. “But if we play like that the rest of the season, we'll be OK. We're still young, still growing.”

Howard scored 10 points in the first half to help East build its lead to as many as 12 points.

But Goswick matched the 10 points, and a gritty Cougars defense forced 10 turnovers to remain within striking range, down 31-24 at the break.

Craig lost sophomore Rileigh Elgas, who scored in double figures in the opener, to an injury in the opening minutes.

“Losing Rileigh hurt us. She had a great game against La Follette,” Storbakken said. “And we got in some foul trouble again.

“But I'm very happy with the effort.”

Justice Filip added 14 points for East.

Junior Emily Pierson had 14 for Craig, while freshman Claudia Fieiras added nine.

The Cougars play at Sun Prairie next Friday.
