TOWN OF BELOIT – An Orfordville woman died Thursday evening in a traffic crash that injured one other, according to a press release from the Town of Beloit Police Department.

At 5:37 p.m. Thursday, officers from the Town of Beloit Police Department and deputies from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash involving a semitrailer truck and pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 213 and County Q.

The driver and sole occupant of the semi, 66-year-old Kirk R. Schmidt of South Beloit, Illinois, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a hospital, according to the press release.

The driver of the pickup truck, Melissa M. Whitten, 27, of Orfordville, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

Whitten’s passenger, her 5-month-old daughter, was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, where it was determined the child did not suffer any injuries, according to the press release.

The family of the deceased and the child was notified, and the child was released to the family, the press release states.

The crash caused a power outage in the surrounding area, and residents remained without power for several hours during the crash investigation and vehicle recovery. Alliant Energy crews responded to the scene to restore power, according to the press release.

The accident remains under investigation by the Town of Beloit Police Department, Rock County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol Reconstruction Unit.
