August 9, 1941 - November 14, 2017

Charles LeRoy Titus, age 76, of Janesville, died on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital. He was born on Aug. 9, 1941, in Chicago to Grace and Henry Titus. After attending a one room school in Oak Hill, WI for his first eight grades of education, he graduated high school as salutatorian in 1959. Charles went on to graduate from UW-Whitewater in 1963, and then attended UW-Madison to earn a Master of Science Degree in Science Education in 1965. Charles married Darlene Schmidt of Palmyra in Aug. of 1963. They have three children. Charlie had a long and distinguished 34 year teaching career. He taught science at a junior high school in Whitewater for one year before being hired in Janesville to teach science at the old Marshall Junior High on Main Street. He transferred to Edison Middle School when it was built. Charlie took a ten year hiatus from teaching beginning in 1976. He owned his own hearing aid dealership for several years and serviced the Southern WI area. Thereafter, he worked at Gilman Engineering, followed by several years as a medical instrument salesman for Warner Lambert with a territory that included the entire state of WI and UP. In 1985, he returned to Edison Middle School where he taught science until his retirement in 2007. He believed that the years spent in Sales ultimately made him a better teacher. He returned to education renewed and refreshed. His highly developed sense of humor as well as his excellent teaching skills went a long way toward imparting the subject of science during the many years of his tenure as a teacher. Charlie enjoyed taking his family camping and exploring all of Wisconsin, particularly the Door County region. He also was very interested in Civil War history and he had written and published several poems and short stories on the subject. During retirement, he and Darlene traveled several times to both coasts to visit children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children: David Titus, Vickie (Bob) Calnin, and Steve (Stacy) Titus; grandchildren: Nicole, Ashley, Matt, Ben and Marcie; and great grandchildren, Devon and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY with Rev. Naomi Garber officiating.
