March 11, 2004 - November 12, 2017

Matthew Allen Winter, age 13, of Evansville died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, after a courageous battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Matthew’s cancer was diagnosed three years ago and has been in remission until it returned last year and ultimately took his life. He was born in Janesville on March 11, 2004, the son of Rene C. (Knudson) Winter and Matthew P. Winter. Matthew attended JC McKenna Middle School in Evansville as an eighth grader, where he had many friends and gained an incredible amount of support from his teachers and classmates. Matthew was a very likable and friendly child, who was all boy. Like most boys at his age, he was active in sports, played video games, especially his X-Box, tubing, fishing, snowmobiling, baseball, riding his dirt bike, and most of all playing his drums. When Matthew got his first set of drums he became pretty good at playing them in a short time. As he got more proficient, he was asked to play in the Jazz Band Ensemble at school, a challenge he readily accepted. Although he was unable to read music, he learned quickly so he could show off his talents at other functions.

Even though his treatments took a toll on him and his family, Matthew was always very optimistic and positive. He was more worried about everyone else than himself. Matthew spent many days at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, and quickly became an inspiration to the doctors, nurses, and staff, as well as other patients. He supported and encouraged them emotionally, as they supported him medically.

Matthew is survived by his mother and step-father, Rene and Paul Wieloch of Evansville; father and step-mother, Matthew and Carolyn Winter of Delavan; his sister and brother, Caitlin West and Jordan Knudson; grandparents, Clara and Jeff Knudson of Evansville, and Lois Uhr of Delavan; and great-grandmother, Susan Knudson of Evansville. He is further survived by aunts and uncles: Russell Knudson, Kyle Uhr, and Shane Uhr; many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his great-grandfather, Charles Knudson, Jr.; and his grandfather, Matt Winter.

A Celebration and Funeral service honoring Matthew’s life will be held at the WHITCOMB – LYNCH FUNERAL HOME on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. with a funeral service at 6 p.m. with Pastor Aaron White officiating. A private interment will be at Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be greatly appreciated if they were made to Winter Strong Benefit Fund, c/o BMO Harris Bank, 25 N. Madison St., Evansville, WI 53546.

A very sincere and heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at American Family Children’s Hospital and Agrace Hospice for the wonderful care, encouragement, and compassion, given to Mathew. Also thank you to all the teachers and staff at JC McKenna Middle School, neighbors, and friends for their prayers, support, and just being there when we needed you most. All of you are true angels!

“I Love You To The Moon And Back!”
