TOWN OF MILTON—A Whitewater man was arrested on a felony operating while intoxicating charge after crashing his vehicle with a 7-month-old child inside, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office news release.

Charles D. Bruenig, 40, was driving west on East County N around 2:53 p.m. Monday when he entered a turn lane to North Highway 26 and rear-ended a semitrailer truck already in the lane, according to the release.

Bruenig said he was reading a text message before crashing. He displayed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking before driving, according to the release.

It's Bruenig's third operating while intoxicated offense, but having a 7-month-old boy in the vehicle at the time of the crash makes the charge a felony. There were no injuries, and the child was turned over to his mother, according to the release.

Bruenig awaits his initial court appearance Tuesday in the Rock County Jail. He was cited for operating while suspended and inattentive driving.
