JANESVILLE—Although a major bookseller with Wisconsin roots plans to shutter all its locations, a Janesville bookstore with the same name—Book World—will remain open, its owners say.

Appleton-based bookstore chain Book World, Inc. this week announced it plans to liquidate its inventory and close all 45 of its locations, 20 of which are in Wisconsin.

A bookstore in Janesville with a similar name, Book World of Janesville, is independently owned and not part of the closing chain, the store said. The Janesville store has no plans to close.

Book World of Janesville's ownership posted the following message to the store's Facebook page Wednesday:

“Some of you may have heard the news that the Book World chain is closing, but have no fear, for we are a locally-owned, independent Book World. Remember to shop local!”

Owners of Book World of Janesville could not immediately be reached, but a store employee told The Gazette on Thursday that the Janesville store will remain open, and its operations are in no way tied to Book World, Inc.

“We're not a part of a chain. We're privately owned,” employee Melanie Higgins said. “We're still going strong.”

Book World of Janesville has been privately run since it opened in 1986, according to its website.

Book World, Inc. was founded in Rhinelander in 1976. Its stores were mostly in small cities in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Iowa and North Dakota.

The company said in an announcement on its website this week that it was liquidating its inventory and closing all its stores, citing business loss to online book sales.
