TOWN OF BELOIT--A survey of town residents has come up with four possible names for a new village.

The names are: village of River Oaks, village of Turner, village of Beloit or village of Riverside, according to a news release from the town on Wednesday.

The town plans a second survey in which these four will be the choices.

The votes in the first survey were:

-- River Oaks, 73

-- Turner or a variation, such as Turner Heights or Turner Oaks, 60

-- Beloit or a variation, such as North Beloit, 40

-- Riverside, 39

The survey will again be online. Residents can find the link on the town Facebook page.

Residents also can call the town hall, 608-364-2980, or stop in at 2871 S. Afton Road to register their preferences.

The deadline to vote is Dec. 1.

The town board will decided whether the winner of the new survey will be the name or whether another step in the process is necessary, according to the release.

Residents with questions are asked to contact town staff.

The town board voted 3-2 earlier this year to gather the 50 signatures needed to submit a petition and application in Rock County Court to start the process of incorporating of a portion of the town of Beloit into a village.

Town Administrator Ian Haas said Wednesday that 183 residents have signed the petition, and officials hope to apply to file in court in December.

The court would hold a hearing, and then the town would submit an application to the state Department of Administration for a six-month review, Haas said.

The review process would include public hearings in the town, Haas said. The final step is a referendum.
