Turner High got a taste of the playoffs, but they wanted more than an appetizer.

The Trojans ran into high-powered Platteville High and left with a 54-42 loss in a WIAA Division 4 playoff game Friday night.

Platteville took a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, but Turner responded in the third quarter to take a one-possession lead at 28-20.

But Platteville’s Ethan Bernhardt led another surge and the Trojans could not keep up with their host.

“What it comes down to is the playoffs are kind of new for us,” Turner coach Derek Diehl said. “I think it was first-game jitters. Before we knew it, we were down three scores.”

Turner cut into the margin with a second-quarter touchdown and trailed 20-7 at half.

The Trojans took the second-half kickoff and scored and eventually took a 28-20 lead.

“We came out in the second half and finally played Turner football,” Diehl said.

Platteville (9-1) responded and left Turner with a final 7-3 record.

“I wish we would have gotten this so they knew what it takes,” Diehl said of his squad. “We have a nice group of juniors coming back. We just have to plug in a few players and we’ll be back.”
